News: Collaboration Improves The Environment

Wilding Butler Construction has collaborated with students at the University of Southampton to the benefit of both the parties and the environment.

The thirty students were studying Environmental Management Systems in the School of Civil Engineering and the Environment. Wilding Butler was keen to update its environmental policy and move towards the internationally recognised environmental standard ISO 14001. The students visited the offices and sites of Wilding Butler to assess the company’s current environmental awareness. They formed teams of six with a view to producing some alternative Environmental Management Systems (EMS’s) for the company.

Over a period of twelve weeks the five teams analysed the activities of Wilding Butler and the impact that it was having on the environment before producing an EMS Manual. The company agreed to interview each of the teams, select the best EMS and make an award to the winning team.

Phil Wilding, Managing Director of Wilding Butler stated “We always considered ourselves to be environmentally aware but the students have produced five first class reports containing several observations that will enable us to take action to improve a number of issues. This exercise will definitely improve our management of environmental issues.”

Simon Kemp, Lecturer in Environmental Science at the University was equally enthusiastic “I’ve been running this course for eleven years but this is the first time that we’ve used a real company to help us assess the quality of the manuals produced by the students. Wilding Butler involved all of its Directors as part of the process. I’m delighted they took it so seriously.”
